Why learn German?  Why take German? Why study German?

Whatever becomes of Germany politically in the near term, it remains one of Europe's most important countries:

Location:

In the center of Europe, it shares borders with 9 other European countries.

Language:

German is still a leading lingua franca in eastern Europe, along with Russian and English.

Economy:

Currently in steep decline with little hope of market-oriented reforms from their so-called "conservative" party.

Technology:

Still a leading producer of innovation in some fields, even as their brain-drain accelerates.

Culture:

Historically among the finest in the world, despite its protracted stagnation since WWII.

Media:

Envy-driven disdain for anything American, growing for years, has reached a fever pitch in print and electronic media.

Education:

Currently among the worst in Europe at all levels, Germany's abysmal performance in the Europe-wide PISA academic achievement tests demonstrates that the left's programmatic dumbing-down of German children, particularly the boys, continues unabated.

Crime:

Crime rates are soaring in larger cities.

Security:

  1. Germany, no longer a reliable US ally, is an increasingly dangerous security risk for the US, its citizens, and its economic and military assets.

  2. It has become a primary venue for radical Islamist, anarchist, Judeo-Christian egalitarian, socialist, and environmental extremist organizing, recruitment, and cross-pollination to advance their relentless culture war against the West.

  3. Rumors persist that the German government and corporations regularly pay protection money to terror organizations to spare German assets.  German pandering to Islamist extremists make it an ideal forward base for terrorist sleeper cells and a procurement bazaar for high-tech terror tools.

  4. A snide anti-Americanism is widely palpable, despite lingering goodwill toward individual Americans on the part of many individual Germans.

  5. As an American who first traveled in Germany in the mid-sixties, I now see arrogant superiority to, alienation from, and envy of America throughout Germany, much like that I experienced only in communist East Germany back then.  Many feel it is their mission to see the USA humbled.

  6. Despite the planned redeployment of tens-of-thousands of American military personnel and other assets currently in Germany, there is a bright future for well-trained American security specialists, who can function at near-native proficiency in German and Arabic, and who possess a thorough familiarity with German culture.
