Joyce Carol Oates Masterclass Course Overview
In our Joyce Carol Oates Masterclass review, we realized that, for some people, the course may appear to be intimidating, especially for beginners. But fortunately, it isn’t.
We like the PDF workbook of this course more than the course. It included reviews of each lesson, homework, case studies of short stories, and much more.
Every aspiring writer seems to be confused about finding inspirations and ideas for stories. Joyce gives some hacks about where to find ideas. She encourages writers to confront taboos and dig into the pain that could ultimately result in a heart-wrenching story.
Most of the lessons cover in-depth analysis of short stories. She analyses and criticizes famous short stories, her own and two of her students’. The most satisfying thing about the course is that it covers the arena of short stories in every sphere of fiction.
Brimming with a number of assignments to practice, the PDF workbook itself deserves a five-star rating. The task starts small and simple, as if it were a warm-up session for your brain, and then slowly taps into the large ones.
The roundtable with two of Oates’ students illustrates the critiquing process. We were not expecting something like this. But it gives a great understanding of observation and analysis.
The only thing that we have a gripe with is that it seemed to cover a fifteen week course within 3 hours and 20 minutes. This might make it seem a bit vague to some learners. So, our suggestion would be that, if you have an all access pass of Masterclass, you should definitely watch it. But we might not recommend buying this course only for creative writing.

To answer the question, “Is Joyce Carol Oates Masterclass course worth it?” – we would conclude that anyone who loves to analyze and dig deep into short stories will find this course very useful.
