Many of us dream as children of becoming an astronaut, of becoming the first person to see some kind of cosmic wonder from the window of our spacecraft. Very few people indeed actually go on to do it. One of those people, though, is Chris Hadfield. The first Canadian to walk in space is now sharing insight into just how he achieved that feat with a Masterclass course.

Who Is Chris Hadfield?
Chris Hadfield was born in 1959 in Canada and was raised on a farm in Ontario. He remembers being inspired by the Apollo 11 moon landings, and went on to join the Royal Canadian Air Cadets as a teenager. He earned a glider pilot scholarship at the age of just 15, and a powered pilot scholarship when he was just a year older. He graduated from high school in 1978 and joined the Canadian Armed Forces.
After joining up, Hadfield spent two years at the Royal Roads military College, followed by another two years at the Royal Military College. It was from the latter institution that he would receive his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1982. He went on to train as a fighter pilot, completing his training with 410 Tactical Fighter Operational Training Squadron at CFB Cold Lake. As a pilot, Hadfield flew CF-18 Hornets with 425 Tactical Fighter Squadron. His duties centred on flying intercept missions for NORAD. He was the first CF-18 pilot to intercept a Soviet Tupolev Tu 95 long-range bomber in the Canadian Arctic.
Later in the 1980s, he would begin to develop links with US forces. He attended the US Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base, and later served as an exchange officer with the US Navy at Strike Test Directorate at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. He graduated with a master’s degree in aviation systems from the University of Tennessee Space Institute in 1992, something which readied him for the step up to become an astronaut.
Hadfield’s space adventures began in 1992. That was when he was selected to become one of four new Canadian astronauts from a field of 5,300. As his career with NASA progressed, he worked alongside Russian cosmonauts on several projects, and learned to pilot the Soyuz TMA spacecraft. He would also become the only Canadian to ever board the Russian space station Mir. He also made several trips into space as part of missions to the International Space Station in the 2000s.
In 2012, Hadfield achieved another milestone when he became the first Canadian to captain the International Space Station. He returned home from the ISS in May 2013. Touchingly, he recorded a version of David Bowie’s song ‘Space Oddity’ at the end of his time at the station.

How Long Is The Chris Hadfield Masterclass Course?
There are 28 lessons in the Chris Hadfield Masterclass course, and around seven and a half hours of video content. Each lesson lasts around 12 minutes, so should not eat into too much of your life. All of the material can, of course, be accessed your mobile device.
Learning from Chris Hadfield at Masterclass will cost you £170 for the All-Access Pass which will give you access to all of the courses that Masterclass has to offer.
As well as the time taken to watch the course videos, you will also need to spend some time reviewing the various materials and notes associated with it. The time demands are not onerous, though. This is especially true of this course as there are not drills or skills that you need to spend time practicing away from the lessons.
Chris Hadfield Masterclass: Course Content
Of course, travelling into space is not something that can be readily done by just anyone. Whether you will ever get to put Hadfield’s lessons into practice looks unlikely. This is not a course like Stephen Curry’s basketball Masterclass, or Gordon Ramsey’s course on cookery, where you can practice the skills at home. This is a course that is much more about making you properly aware of the sheer breadth of skills that an astronaut must have.
It also provides valuable insights into the life of an astronaut, and the kind of decisions that have to be made in the extreme environment of space. For that reason, it is definitely insightful and extremely interesting. You are not going to be qualified to be an astronaut by the time you have completed it.
But as long as you are aware that the practical applications of the course are going to be somewhat limited, this is a really good Masterclass course. The materials are as classy as you would expect from Masterclass, and Hadfield is a very engaging tutor. One could listen to his stories about space all day.
